Ship of the Year 2021

Norwegian ferry operator Norled has taken delivery of the world’s first liquid hydrogen-powered ferry, MF Hydra. The vessel was designed by engineering company LMG Marin and constructed at Westcon shipyard in Norway.

It has now been announced that MF Hydra has won the prestigious “Ship of the Year” award for 2021. The vessel is equipped with a complete LED lighting package from Glamox. This is an energy efficient lighting solution with long lifetime and produce considerably less waste than conventional light. It will not only save energy and maintenance cost, with reducing emissions it is also good for the environment. Glamox has delivered technical lighting, floodlights, navigation lights and interior lighting such as downlights etc.

About MF Hydra
The ferry is 82.4 meters long with a capacity of up to 300 passengers and 80 cars. The DNV-classed vessel will be able to reach a speed of 9 knots with fuel cells of 2×200 kW and generators of 2×440 kW which will power Shottel thrusters. Furthermore, the vessel is equipped with an 80 m3 tank for hydrogen storage.

Norled has selected industrial gas and energy company Linde to supply the vessel with liquid hydrogen. Liquid hydrogen will be supplied from Linde’s new 24MW electrolyzer at the Leuna Chemical Complex in Germany, which will use Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) technology to produce green hydrogen.

The fuel cell-powered ferry is expected to reduce its annual carbon emissions by up to 95 per cent.

Reduced cost of ownership

When you upgrade to LED you can reduce the power consumption with more than 80%. Modern LED luminaires have five times longer lifetime than luminaires with conventional light sources, this result in significant savings spent on maintenance.

Case study: How three passenger ferries got to reduce their climate footprint.

Improve the total experience of the ship

By replacing the existing light installation with modern  LED luminaires, you get to save money while saving the environment. Another great advantage is the improved visual comfort for the crew, workers and passenger on the ship, as well as the total experience of the space and interior design.
